John Allday was born on 1 February 1882 in Hemel Hempstead, the son of George and Jane Allday.
On the 1901 Census, the family were living at Park End Place, Park End Street, Oxford St Thomas, where his father was working as a Hawker. His mother worked as a charwoman and John who was 18, was working as a Brewer's Bottleman/Cellarman. He married Nellie Jane Fletcher in 1908 in Oxford.
On the 1911 Census he was living with his wife and 2 year old son John as a boarder at the home of James and Mary Fletcher at 13 English Row, St Aldates Street, Oxford, where he was working as Brewery Labourer. They later had 3 more children.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Oxford and the end of August 1914 and initially served with the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry under reg. no. 11459, later transferring to the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment.
He died of wounds received in action.
Additional Information
His wife, Mrs N J Allday, 45 Friars Street, St Ebbs, Oxford, ordered his headstone inscription: "UNTIL THE DAYBREAK". His widow Nellie received a war gratuity of £17 and pay owing of £13 5s 1d. She was also awarded a pension of £1 13s 9d a week from 4 November 1918.
