Herbert was born in Hatfield c1896, the son of John and Jane Parrott.
In the 1891 census Herbert is found aged 5 and living in Union Lane Cottage, Hatfield, with his parents and siblings William J (15) and a farm labourer, Elizabeth A (10), George H (8), Rosa S (2), Frederick A (6 months). His father working as a platelayers labourer (railways?).
By 1901 they were living at 6 Salisbury Square, Hatfield. To his siblings Charles is added (3). George was working as siblings at 6 Salisbury Square, Hatfield. Herbert was working as a general labourer and his father a roadman labourer with the County Council. Mother’s name is Jane. They were still there in 1911, with Herbert now working as a woodman for the Marquis of Salisbury and his father a servant labourer with the G.N.R.
Herbert J Parrott married Rosa Mardling in the last quarter of 1912 at Hatfield.
Officially recorded living in Hatfield when he enlisted in Hatfield.
Wartime Service
Formerly 29588 Bedfordshire Regiment. He became Private 55720, Machine Gun Corps.
The Bishop’s Hatfield Parish Magazine of July 1916, records: “Herbert Parrott – Pond Hill – 4th Beds Regt." as serving and in August, 1917: “Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of Herbert Parrott, Herbert Beech and Charles Massam, in the loss which both they and their country have sustained in their death. This is the third member off the Parrott family who has given his life for his country.”
