Hatfield Town Memorial, Hatfield In Memoriam Book

Pre War

Frederick was born in Hatfield c1890, the son of John and Jane Parrott.


In the 1891 census Frederick is found aged 6-months and living in Union Lane Cottage, Hatfield, with his parents and siblings (William J (15) and a farm labourer, Elizabeth A (10), George H (8), Herbert (5), Rosa S (2).  His father working as a platelayers labourer (railways?).


By 1901 they were living at 6 Salisbury Square, Hatfield.  To his siblings Charles is added (3).  George was working as siblings at 6 Salisbury Square, Hatfield.  Herbert was working as a general labourer and his father a roadman labourer with the County Council. Mother’s name is Jane.  They were still there in 1911, with Frederick was now working as a groom and gardener and his father a servant labourer with the G.N.R.


Frederick Arthur Parrott was 25 years 6 months old when he enlisted at Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk. He had been employed as a groom, gardener.  He was 5ft 6inchs tall and deemed fit.  


Officially recorded living in Hatfield when he enlisted in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

Wartime Service

Frederick was home service from 14.3.16 – 10.6.16. 


Embarked at Southampton, and disembarked at Rouen to join his unit in the field.  He was killed in action 4.10.16.  


His personal effects were sent to his mother, Mrs Jane Parrott, who was listed as next of kin.   see Mothers letter on receipt of Frederick’s effects below.


Awarded the British War Medal and Victor Medal.

Brother of Herbert James and William John Parrott who were also killed in the war,


Hatfield Parish Council Souvenir Committee Ledger: Mrs J. G. Parrott (Mother) of Glebeland, Salisbury Sq. Hatfield, received an “In Memoriam and Roll of Honour Album”.
