Son of Rosina (nee IRELAND) and the late James TANSLEY.
His parents married 4 August 1879 at The Priory Church, Deeping St James, Lincs. James died 1901 in the Bourne, Lincs, district aged 71 and was buried at The Priory Church; Rosina died 1943 in the Nottingham district aged 91 and was buried at the Northern Cemetery, Bulwell, Notts.
James was born 1880 in Deeping St James, and baptised 4 July 1880 at The Priory Church.
On the 1881 Census, aged 9 months he lived in Deeping St James, with his parents and one sibling. On the 1891 Census, aged 10 he still lived in Deeping St James, with his parents and no siblings. On the 1901 Census, an ostler aged 20, he was a servant living in Ely, Cambs. On the 1911 Census, he is proving elusive.
Wartime Service
He originally enlisted 18 September 1905 in Peterborough, Northants: a groom aged 23, 5’6″ tall, for Short Service (3 years with the Colours, 3 years in the Reserve), and joined at Northampton 20 September 1905.
He served in India from November 1907 until March 1911, when he was transferred to the Army Reserve on the expiration of his period of Army Service.
He went to France with the B.E.F. 12 August 1914, and was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 13 August 1914.
He was posted missing, presumed killed in action, 17 September 1914; his mother was notified 30 April 1915.
