Pre War

William was born in 1869 in Stotfold, Bedfordshire and his parents were Samuel and Sarah Ann Albon (née Curtis).

In 1871 the family were living lodging at The Baptist Chapel, Stotfold, Beds. Present were the head of the house Martha Millard (48) and her lodgers Samuel (23) and Sarah Ann Albon (25) and their son William (1). Samuel was working as a bricklayer

In 1881 the family were living at The Green, Stotfold, Beds. Present were both parents, Samuel still working as a bricklayer. William had new siblings: Martha (9), John (7), Sarah Elizabeth. (6), Jonah C. (3) and Harriett (1).

By 1891 Samuel was 41 and widowed. The family were living at The Stag, Stotfold, Beds. Both Samuel and William were bricklayers, Of the other children listed above Martha was absent and new siblings were George (10) and Charley (7).

So far none of the family have been found in the 1901 census.

William married Hannah Katherine Schultz (b 21/10/81) in 1905 in Elstree, Hertfordshire.

By 1911 William (39) married Hannah (29) were living at 142 Common View, Letchworth, with William now working as a general labourer for bricklayer. The census recorded they had been married for 5 years with 3 children, all living. Their children were Rose Elizabeth (b 21/5/1906), Hannah Katherine (b 6/5/1908) and Annie Louise (b 5/9/1910)

In 1913 another daughter, Beatrice Martha (b 12/5/1913) was born.

Officially William was recorded as born in Stotfold, Beds and living and enlisting on Hitchin.

Wartime Service

His Regimental Number was 39308 and he was in the 15th Battalion of the Regiment.


He died on 4 January 1917 in a Military Hospital in Chisledon of rheumatism myocardial failure and is buried in Hitchin Cemetery, Grave E.809.

Additional Information

After his death £5 4s 2d was authorised to go to his widow and children on 30 May 1917. Later, a war gratuity of £5 15s was authorised to be paid to on 25 March 1920.

His pension cards record Hannah Katherine Albone, his widow, as his dependant, living at 70 Walsworth Road, Hitchin. The card also records their children: Rose Elizabeth (b 21/5/1906), Hannah Katherine (b 6/5/1908), Annie Louise (b 5/9/1910) and Beatrice Martha (b 12/5/1913). She was awarded a pension of 13s 9d plus a children’s allowance of 9s 2d a week from 9 July 1917. However ther is an additional note which says “Pension is not usable for Rose & Hannah inmates of Pield Health House Special School, Hillingdon*2, since a grant is made towards their maintenance from public funds [Hertfordshire County Council] widow contributes 1 shilling a week for each child
