Pre War

Born in 1880 in New Road, Ware, Hertfordshire and baptised on 25 Apr 1880 at Christchurch, Ware son of George Henry and Mary Ann (Hilton) Albany.

He was educated at Hertford Grammar School and was living in Springfield House, London Road, Ware in 1901 as a sailor.

He was in the merchant navy well before WW1 and a third mate in 1901. He was awarded his foreign going first mate certificate on 8 Jan 1904 and his master’s certificate on 8 Mar 1907.

Wartime Service

He drowned as a result of an attack by an enemy submarine U-48 off the Fastnet Rock, Ireland where the ship sank with the loss of 43 lives. She was carrying munitions from the USA.

Additional Information

Horace is also commemorated on the family headstone Ware Old Cemetery. All we can read of the inscription from current images is:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF HORACE HERBERT ALBANY, AGED 37 YEARS.
DEARLY BELOVED 3RD SON OF THE LATE GEORGE HENRY AND MARY ANN ALBANY.
CHIEF OFFICER OF THE S. S. MINNEHAHA DROWNED AT SEA IN THE SINKING OF THAT SHIP BY ENEMY ACTION OFF BANTRY BAY SEP 7TH 1917.
