Born in 1890, in Bengeo, to parents Henry and Elizabeth, he was one of seven and in 1891 they were living in Byde Street, Bengeo, his father was employed as a brewer’s drayman. By 1901 they were living in Hertingfordbury Road, Hertford, and his father was now a labourer bricklayer. They were still living there in 1911 and his father was now a gardening labourer and Herbert was a cycle repairer.
Wartime Service
Territorial Force 1314. According to Herbert’s medal roll index he enlisted in the Royal Artillery as Gunner 1314 and later transferred to another unit as 890314 and served in France from 21st November 1915.
He is not listed on the CWGC database as he was discharged on 22nd April 1919, and we have no date of death. Usually not being on the CWGC implies that when his death occurred it would be after August 1921.
