Henry was born on 29 Jun 1886 (baptised 1 Jul 1886) in Little Amwell, Hertford Heath to Henry Akers, a publican and an Iron & Brass founder, and Matilda (nee Stark).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, William, James, Flora, Henry and Robert were living at the Horse and Dray, Little Amwell. The 1901 Census had the family living at the Street, Little Amwell but William and James were absent from the record but there had been the addition of John (born 1892) and Charles (born 1897). Henry was a packing case maker. The family were still at this address in 1911. Henry was now classed as a forester.
Wartime Service
Henry enlisted at Bedford on 17 Nov 1916 as Private 98209 Royal Army Medical Corps and was posted to ‘P’ Company RAMC. At some time he went on a course and qualified as a Cook.
On 23 Jan 1917 he was posted to 324 Field Ambulance stationed at Worksop Nottinghamshire, near a recruit training area. On 18 Jun 1918 he took ill with Aortic Influenza and was transferred to 3 Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. Henry was returned to his unit on 10 July.
On 24 Oct 1918 he was diagnosed with Influenza Pneumonia and again transferred to 3 Northern General Hospital, Sheffield where died from this illness on 24 Oct 1918.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £6 and arrears of £2 13s was paid to his father. Brother James served with Royal Fusiliers and was killed in action 12 Feb 1916.
