Pre War

Alfred Edward Parkes was born in 1886 in St Pancras, Middx, the son of Henry and Virginia Parkes, and baptised at Christ Church, Albany Street, Camden, London. They were living at 8 Glen Street and his father was working as a Railway Clerk. On the 1901 Census the family were living at 118 Clifford Gardens, Harlesden and both he and his father were working as Ledger Clerks. 


He married Emma Amelia Davey on 25 March 1909 at All Souls, Harlesden, Middx and they were living at 'Bronalt', Oxhey Street, Oxhey, Herts on the 1911 Census.  They had two children, Winifred (1912) and George (1914) and later lived at 4 Park Road, Radlett. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, Herts and served in the 158th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.


He was killed in action near Arras on 7 September 1918, aged 32, and is buried in Mindel Trench British Cemetery, St Laurent-Blangy, France.

Additional Information

Probate was granted to his father on 14 October with effects of £337 17s 9d.


His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 18s 7d. She also received a pension of £1 14s 3d a week from 31 March 1919 for herself and her children.
