Pre War

William John Parker was born in Barkway, Hertfordshire in 1893, the son of William and Sarah Parker, and was baptised on 8 October 1893 in Barkway.


On the 1901 Census his father was working as a gardener domestic in Street, nr Wentworth, at Brampton Bierlow, Yorkshire. Neither William nor his mother were listed with him. By 1911 William and his father were living at Street, Wentworth, Nr Rotherham, Yorkshire. His father was working as a gardener and William was a stone mason. His mother's whereabouts are unknown. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Sheffield and joined the York and Lancaster Regiment and served with the 10th battalion in France. 


William died of wounds at the 44th Casualty Clearing Station, France, on 16 November 1916, aged 23, and is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, France. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 3s 10d. Pension cards exist with his mother as dependant but give no indication of the amount of pension paid.
