Pre War
Adopted son of Mr and Mrs. John Crouch of Sayfield Cottages, but reported to be the son of Mrs. Emily Palmer by the C.W.G.C.
Eric enlisted at Wood Green in September 1914 and was sent out to France in March 1915.
Wartime Service
His battalion was in the Ypres area of Belgium on April 19th. and went to St. Jean on 20th. (1st German gas attack here on April 22nd) They took over the trenches in the Gravenstafel area, but pulled out after the enemy raid of May 3rd. This was the day Eric was declared missing. He was later reported, killed in action.
Between the 23rd April and May 3rd. the total casualties, killed, wounded or missing in the battalion was 19 officers and 459 other ranks.
The Royston Crow newspaper recorded his death with a photograph and the wording "the deceased soldier was well known in the district and bore an excellent record at home and with his comrades in arms."
As his body was never found, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial (Panels 6,8) in Ypres, Belgium.
