Pre War

Harry was born in Markyate on 16 Aug 1892 (baptised 2 Oct 1892 in Markyate) to Francis Edward Abbott, butler, and Agnes (nee King).

On the 1901 Census the family of mother Agnes,  Francis (born 1885), Vida (born 1889), and Harry were living with Elisha King, widowed father of Agnes.

Harry attested for the Militia at Bedford on 10 Nov 1908 in the 3rd Battalion as Private 6/6135  giving his occupation as a baker . Serving with them in various locations in the UK. 

On the 1911 Census Harry was listed as a Gas Stoker and was living with his parents, William born  a baker’s boy and Elisha King.

Wartime Service

On the outbreak of the Great War Harry was posted to 1st Battalion Bedfords and went with to join them in France and Flanders on 12 Sep 1914. Harry may have taken part in the Battles of Le Bassee (10 Oct-2 Nov 1914, 1st Ypres (1914) and Hill 60 (17-22 Apr 1915) before being discharged on termination of engagement on 9 Nov 1915.


Harry was called from Reserve  for service on 26 Jul 1916 (he had been Classified B1 medically on 26 Jan 1916) and was posted to Yorkshire Regiment as Private 4784 the next day He received a bounty of £15 with a further £15 pounds to be paid later. He went to France to join 1/5th Yorkshire in France on 27 Jul 1916. His service record in illegible for this period.


On the 18 Feb 1918 he was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)  in 1st Garrison Battalion , stationed in Egypt and gained the Service Number 101336. At some time he was promoted to Sergeant. He reported sick and died of a cerebral haemorrhage on 1 Jul 1918.


Harry had been a Territorial Soldier throughout his peacetime and wartime service.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £5 10s and arrears on 19 6s 0d was paid to his widow Adelaide, she also received a pension of 16s 8d and a grant of £5.


Brother William was also a Territorial Solder serving from 1912 to 1917 with the Army Service Corps until discharge on 2 Dec 1917 and was issued with a Silver War Badge to acknowledge his service.
