Harry Sydney Page was born in Sawbridgeworth, Herts, on 21st Jan 1890, He was the youngest son of nine children born to Joseph and Charlotte Page (nee Holden).
In February 1908 giving the name Henry Sidney Page and occupation of Farm Labourer, he joined the Coldstream Guards. After 17 days he was discharged on payment of £10. Then in May 1910 again under the name Henry Sidney Page and having grown another inch in height (5 ft 11 in.) he joined the Grenadier Guards, after 37 days (7 of which he was reported as absent) he was discharged on payment of £10.
Wartime Service
While serving as a Private 20622 1st Battalion Essex Regiment (There is a record of HS Page 122526 Norfolk Regiment), he was on board HMT Royal Edward, on the way to serve in Gallipoli, when it was sunk by the German Submarine UB-14 on 13/08/15, and was one of 864 Officers and Men missing believed drowned.
Additional Information
The name on the War Memorial is Harry Sidney Page, but on checking the CWGC, SDITGW and Ancestry websites Harry Sydney Page is the name of the only soldier of the 1/Essex who returns on any searches.
