Biography
The following text was transcribed from the The Edmundian (1814-1819) – The contemporary magazine of St Edmund’s College:
Francis Jerome Page; Lance-Sergeant in the 16th Hussars, who met his death through wounds received in action at Ypres on 5th November last, was born in 1884.
When quite a baby he was adopted by his uncle, Mr. Prince, Surveyor of taxes at Kingston-on-Thames, and a few years later he entered St. Hugh's under the name of Prince, by which he was known during his stay here. He passed from St. Hugh's to the College, but the death of his aunt, Mrs. Prince, in February 1896, cut short his course here and necessitated his leaving.
His regiment went to the front quite early in the war. In a postcard written on Dauber 7th, 1914, he remarks "I have two rosaries and am covered with medals given by a Belgian priest before Mons," He was a keen and efficient soldier and was promoted twice within a month. Since his death his name has been mentioned by General French in his despatches(sic) of 14th January, 1915; and he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
