Pre War
Son of Charles and Clara (formerly KING, nee BUNKER) OWEN of Watford.
His parents married 14 February 1887 at Sts Peter and Paul, Tring, Herts. Charles died 1926 in Watford aged 69, and was buried 27 February in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Clara died 1936 in Watford aged 79, and was buried 19 February, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Bertie was born 29 January 1896 in Watford, and baptised 24 February 1899 at St Mary’s, Watford. He attended first Callow Land Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School from 6 January 1903 to 28 January 1910. He resided in Watford.
On the 1901 Census, aged 5 he lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings. On the 1911 Census, a draper’s errand boy aged 15, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.
Additional Information
There is an In Memoriam for Bertie in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 12 October 1918.
Unfortunately, Bertie’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
An Albert Owen is commemorated at St Michael's Church, Watford
