John Outram was born in Hackney, Middlesex, in 1895, son of John Outram a, Dairyman Shopkeeper and Edith Jane Outram (nee Carter). The eldest of four sons.


1901 Census records John Jr. aged 5, living with his parents, and brother Edward (3), at 124 Dalston Lane, Hackney, Middx. The family had a boarder, Percy Shelvey.


1911 Census, John Jr. (15) is recorded as a Student Chartered Accountant, living with his parents, brothers Edward (13), Norman (8) and Angus (5) at, “Lyndale” Cromwell Avenue, Cheshunt, Herts, his father’s occupation is given as an Insurance Agent. His cousins William and Marjorie Carter are living with the family. 

Wartime Service

John Jr. enlisted in the Honourable Artillery Company in November 1915, issued with the service number 5426.


He was Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant to the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry (DCLI) in March 1917.


1st November 1917, the 1st Battalion, DCLI was sent to the front near Polderhoek Chateau during the Third Battle of Ypres (Third Battle of Ypres 31st July to 10th Nov 1917). John Jr. was Killed in Action on 6th November 1917, aged 22, he has not known grave, he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium to the missing.

Additional Information

His effects of £85-14-02, went to his executor, Mrs Edith Jane Outram.
