Pre War
Sydney Arthur Osborne was born in 1899 in Poplar, the son of Arthur George and Elizabeth Jane Osborne. On the 1901 Census the family were living at 41 New City Road, Plaistow, West Ham, Essex. His father's occupation was marine Engineer, which may explain why on 1911 Census, he was living with his mother, brother Godfrey and sister Beatrice at 29 Montpelier Gardens, East Ham, Essex. (His father was not at home). He was working as a Bank Clerk on enlistment.
Wartime Service
Sydney was aged 17 when he enlisted in January 1917 and joined the Army reserve. He was mobilised on 18 October 1917 and went to France on 25 May 1918. He joined his unit on 9 June 1918, but was killed only a couple of months later.
He left a will: "In the event of my death I give the sum of £20 (twenty pounds) to my brother Godfrey Osborne of 56 Ladysmith Avenue, East Ham, London, E/6 and I give £5 (five pounds) to my friend, Miss Emily Dale Boyd of 298, Central Park Rd., East Ham, London, E.6 for the purchase of a gold cross & neck chain, the remainder of my property I give to my mother Mrs. Arthur George Osborne of 56 Ladysmith Ave, East Ham, London E.6 (sgd) S.A. Osborne, Pte., London Scottish, 517303, 15th June 1918."
