Pre War

Harley Oliver was born in Kingsthorpe, Lincolnshire, in late 1894, son of Harry Oliver a, Plumber and Susannah (nee Cartman) Oliver. One of four children.


1901 Census records Harley aged 5, living with his parents, brother Lewis (8) and sister Mary (3) at, Thatched Cottage, Theobalds Grove, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census, Harley (16) is working as a Plumber, living with his parents, sisters Mary (13) and Violet (8) at, Rush Lodge, Theobalds Park, Waltham Cross, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Harley enlisted in London, posted to the “The Buffs” (East Kent Regiment) with the service number G/3267.


In July 1915, Harley and the 8th Battalion, were stationed at, Aldershot, Hampshire, under going final training. He arrived with his Battalion in France on 31st August 1915. Just 26 days later on 26th September 1915, he was Killed in Action, aged 20, at the Battle of Loos, France. (Battle of Loos 25th Sept – 8th Oct 1915) he has no known grave; he is commemorated on the Loos Memorial to the missing.

The SDITGW records his place of birth as Rugby, Warwickshire, all other records have Kingsthorpe, Lincolnshire.
