Cyril was born on 24 Mar 1881 in Frogmore (baptised 21 Apr 1881, Holy Trinity, Frogmore) to Henry Francis Oliver, curate at Holy Trinity, and Ethel Marion (nee Wyatt). On the 1881 Census Henry (Curate at Frogmore) & Ethel were lodging at the White Horse, Park Street, St Stephen with as yet named infant (Cyril F H).


On 1891 Census Cyril, His mother, (together with Cyril and his brother Theodore B) were living at 96 Manor Road Stoke Newington Hackney, the home of Ethel’s parents William T (a medical practitioner) and Edith Wyatt with their family and servant. Cyril was educated at Haileybury College 1895-96.


On 1901 Census Cyril was an unauthorised clerk at the Stock Exchange and was living with his Parents at the Vicarage, Aylesbury lane, Fenny Stratford (where his father was the Vicar, together with Theodore B (born 1891), Edith M A (born 1895), Julia Poston, a visitor and 6 House servants.


Cyril married Margaret Grant White on 4 Apr 1907 in Heene, Sussex.


On the 1911 Census Cyril, now a stockbroker, and Margaret were living at Hill Villa, Gresham Road, Limpsfield, Surrey with sons Kenneth (born 13 Jun 1907) and Antony (born 8 Aug 1909) along with 2 servants. There would be a daughter Elizabeth Margaret (born 19 May 1911).

Wartime Service

Cyril was commissioned in the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own) 12 (Service) Battalion. He may have gone to France with this Battalion as part of 21 Division on 7 Sep 15, having their first experience as reserves rushed into the Battle of Loos on 26 Sep 1915.


In Nov 1915 they were transferred to 9 Brigade 3 Division and took part in the Battles of Albert (1 -13 Jul 1916) and Bazentin Ridge (14 – 17 Jul 1916). Cyril was killed in this battle at Bazentin-le-Grand on 14 Jul 1916 when the 12 West Yorkshires were taking part in the Capture of Longueval.

Additional Information

Effects of £117 17s 6d was paid jointly to his widow and brother Theo. They also were granted probate jointly of £4256 14s 7d.
