Born on 1 Jul 1901 in Ware, Hertfordshire youngest son of Charles Joseph and Susan Ann (Green) Dewbury of 17 Princes Street, Ware, known as Jack.
He joined the St John’s Ambulance Brigade, his father was Divisional Superintendent, in Dec 1912 and worked in the Military Hospitals at Colchester and Norwich.
Wartime Service
Enlisted at Colchester, Essex in Sep 1915 and served at the Gallipoli evacuation. He then served in Mesopotamia from 1916 and was killed in action in a village about 80 miles above Baghdad. He was buried on the field of battle, but his grave was subsequently lost.
Additional Information
Jack is also commemorated on the family headstone in Ware Old Cemetery. His part of the inscription reads:
IN LOVING MEMORY OF [JACK] JOHN JAMES DEWBURY R.A.M.C. YOUNGEST SON OF CHARLES J. AND SUZAN A. DEWBURY.
KILLED IN ACTION IN MESOPOTAMIA APRIL 30TH 1917, AGED 25 YEARS.
“FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH.”
