Pre War
Charles was born in December 16th 1867 in Elstree to John Odell, a carpenter, and Mary (nee Woodcock). On the 1871 Census John & Mary together with the family of Eliza, Walter, Ernest, Amy and Charles were living Elstree village. On the 1881 census their address was recorded as St Albans Road, Aldenham. On the 1891 they were recorded at High Street, Aldenham and Charles was a Post Office Clerk (at that time part of the Civil Service) and the sole offspring living with his parents.
He married Rose East on 29 Apr 1902. There was to be a daughter Violet Mary born in 1903. On the 1911 Census the family were living at the Oaks, Barnet Lane, Elstree.
Wartime Service
Charles enlisted in 9th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles) about Oct 1914 as Rifleman 3519.
There is little Service Records available for Charles. This may be because Charles was 45 years old on enlistment and he may not have been assigned to an active posting. Thus not eligibility to Medals. He died on 7 Dec 1915 and is buried in Elstree.
