Born in 1892 in Wandsworth, London son of Edwin Keates Odam (Engr. Comdr. R.N.).and Mrs Rose Hannah (Fowtrell) Odam and was living in 1 Rose Villas, Gladys Avenue, Portsmouth in 1901 where his father was a Staff Engineer. He later lived in Rye House, Hoddesdon.

Wartime Service

He was already in the Navy in 1911. He was killed when HMS Russell, a Duncan class battleship, hit two mines that had been laid by German submarine U-73 off Malta. A total of 125 men were lost out of a complement of 720.  The Herts Mercury dated 17th June 1916 reported that the ship was torpedoed.

Brother of Assistant Paymaster Edwin Keates Odam RN who was killed in action on 31 May 1916 and who is also commemorated on this memorial.


John is commemorated, along with his brother Edwin, on the family plot in Hoddesdon Cemetery
