Pre War

Son of William Charles and Edith (nee ONSLOW) CROKER of Watford.

His parents married 18 May 1885 at St Anne’s, Bermondsey, Surrey.  William died 1938 in Watford aged 81, and was buried 31 May in Vicarage Road Cemetery; Edith died 1955 in Watford aged 92, and was buried 29 March, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

James was born 1895 in Bermondsey, and baptised 9 August 1895 at Corpus Christi Mission Church, Camberwell, London.  He resided in Watford, and was buried 3 August.

On the 1901 Census, aged 5 he lived in East Ham, Essex, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a labourer in an oil works (recorded as Richard) aged 15, he lived in Silvertown, London, with his parents and three siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Canning Town, London; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and died at the Military Hospital, Eastbourne, Hants, of wounds received in action.

Additional Information

His brother William died 27 March 1917 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, James’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
