Pre War
John Curtis Noyes was born on 19 February 1894 in Esher, Surrey, the son and only child of Robert and Alicia Isabel Noyes (nee Leman), and was baptised on 26 August 1894 at St Mary's Church, Putney, London. Their residence was then recorded as The Cabin, Esher and his father's occupation as solicitor.
By the 1901 Census John and his mother were living as lodgers with John and Edna Whittaker and their family at Minn Bank, Maer, Staffordshire, at which time his mother is described as a sculptress. His father was recorded living at 54 St George's Road, Hanover Square, Belgrave, London and working as a solicitor on his own account.
John was educated at Haileybury College, Hertford from 1906 to 1912 and was recorded as a 17 year old boarder on the 1911 Census, later enrolling in Clare College, Cambridge.
His parents were living at Lincoln House, Marsh Lane, Mill Hill, Middlesex in 1911 but were recorded on the 1921 Census as living at Ringstead, Ashwell.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in London in June 1916 and initially joined the Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 7222, later transferring to the Somerset Light infantry (part of the 43rd Brigade, 14th Division), serving as a Private with the 6th Battalion.
John was killed in action on 16 September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 1s 4d. He also obtained probate of John's estate in London on 28 November 1917 with effects of £4155 15s 3d. John's residence was recorded as Ringstead, Ashwell, Herts.
