Pre War
George Nottage was born in 1886 in Barkway, Hertfordshire, the son of Lizzie Nottage, and baptised on 14 March 1886 at the Church of St Mary Magdalene, Barkway.
On the 1891 Census George was living with his grandparents, Nathan and Sarah in the High Street, Barkway, where his grandfather worked as a labourer. His mother married Frederick Charter in 1894, but George remained with his grandparents and in 1901 was living with them in High Street, Barkway, and working as a labourer on a farm. His grandmother died in 1904 and his grandfather was in the workhouse in 1911, but George was recorded on the Census as a boarder at the home of William Nottage (his uncle) in the High Street, Barkway and working as a farm labourer.
The Soldiers Died In The Great War database records that he was born in Royston and was living there when he enlisted in Hertford.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Hertford and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 2nd Battalion in France from 2 November 1914.
George was killed in action on 3 December 1915. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His mother Lizzie Charter received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £6 0s 10d. No pension records have been found.
