Pre War

Harold Norwood was born in 1899 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Norwood. He had an older sister called Hettie. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 6 Manor Street, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a labourer in a chemical works. They remained at the same address in 1911 and Harold was then a 12 year old scholar. 


His parents later moved to 17 Manor Street, Berkhamsted. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, Herts and initially joined the 21st Training Reserve Battalion (Reg. No. Tr/10/2570), later transferring to the 10th (Service) Battalion, Rifle Brigade.


He died from pneumonia on 2 February 1918, aged 18, at the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station in Belgium and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His mother received a pension initially of 3s 6d a week, later increased to 5s a week from 6 November 1918. His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £4 16s 4d. 


Harold is also commemorated on the family grave, in Rectory Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted.
