Pre War
Thomas Heading North was born in 1875 in Berkhamsted, the son of William and Elizabeth Nash, and was baptised on 11 July 1875 in Great Berkhamsted. He was the youngest of six boys.
On the 1881 and 1891 censuses the family were living at Castle Street, Berkhamsted. In 1891 15 year old Thomas was working as a printer's boy.
His mother died in 1899 in Berkhamsted and on the 1901 Census Thomas was living with Edward Purvis, a grocery shopkeeper at 15 & 16 Greens End, Woolwich, where he was working as a grocer's assistant.
By 1910 he had set up in business on his own and in the Kelly's directory for Walthamstow, Essex he was listed as grocer at 168 High Street.
On the 1911 Census he was living on his own and gave his occupation as grocer (employer) living at 168 High Street, Walthamstow, Essex.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Banbury, Oxfordshire and served with the 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards.
He was killed in action on 29 July 1917, aged 42 and is buried in Duhallows A.D.S. Cemetery, Belgium. This was after his body had originally found at map ref. B.5.d.5.5..
Additional Information
His brother Mr A North, of 1 Gosport Road, Walthamstow, E17 was named as next of kin on CWGC records.
His father received pay owing of £9 17s 4d and the war gratuity of £7 10s was divided equally between his brother Alfred and sister Elizabeth.
