Pre War

Arthur Frederick Owen Norris was born in the second half of 1893, in Haynes, Bedfordshire, son of David Robert Norris, an Estate Game Keeper and Kate Norris (nee Tufnell/Tuffnell). The eldest of seven children, two died in infancy.


1901 Census records Arthur as Frederick aged 7, living with his parents, brother Francis (3) and sister Constance (1) at, “New Lodge”, Church End, Flitwick, Beds.


1911 Census records Arthur aged 18, single, and employed as a Railway Porter, he is boarding with Thomas Coper, in Station Road, Lower Stondon, Beds.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted at Bedford, in January 1916. Posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 25675.


He was killed in action on 30 October 1917, in the area of Poelcappelle, Belgium, during the Second Battle of Passchendaele. (26 October to 10 November 1917). He has no known grave; he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing, in Belgium. 

Additional Information

His mother Kate received a Dependents Pension of 3/6 a week from 14 May 1918, increased to 5/- a week from 6 November 1918. Her address was given as “Flitwick Lodge” Flitwick, Beds. she also received his effects of £12-8s-0d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £11.
