Born on 24 Jul 1877 in Devizes, Wiltshire son of Arthur Charles and Louisa Mary (Trevor) Devas later of Cleeve Cottage, Minehead.
Educated at Haileybury College 1891–94. Fought in South Africa 1899–1902. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 3 Sep 1902 and Lieutenant 17 Jan 1906 in the Essex Regiment.
Wartime Service
Was stationed in Mauritius at the start of the war in Aug 1914.
