Frank Albert Nightingale was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in 1896, son of John Nightingale a, Gardener and Elizabeth (Pearce) Nightingale.


1901 Census records Frank aged 5, living with his parents, and sister Harriet (8) in, Appleby Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


His father John died in the early part of 1902, aged 33. His mother Elizabeth remarried in 1910 to George Warman.


1911 Census records Frank aged 15, living with his Mother Elizabeth, Stepfather George Warman and half-sister, Gladys Warman, 2 months in, Swanfield Villa, Goffs Lane, Goffs Oak, Cheshunt, Herts.

Wartime Service

Frank enlisted at Tottenham, Middx, posted to the Kings Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) with the service number 30487. On completion of his training, he was sent to the Western Front.


He died on 15th October 1917, of wounds received in action. He is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery in Belgium.

Additional Information

His mother Elizabeth received a Dependents Pension of 6/- a week from 23rd April 1918, and his effects of £3-13-8, pay owing and his war gratuity of £9.


His Headstone inscription “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS” was requested by his mother Elizabeth.
