Pre War

Sidney Edward Newton was born on 25 September 1893 in Twickenham, the son of Daniel and Emily Newton and was baptised on 29 October 1893 at St Mary the Virgin, Twickenham, London.  He had an older brother Alfred and a younger sister Dorothy.  The family were then living at 49 Heathfield Road and his father was working as a foreman.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Butts Villas, Hanworth, Middlesex where his father was working as a market gardener. 


His father died in 1905 and in 1911 he was living with his uncle, Sidney Stops  at The Poplars, Black Boys, Framfield, Sussex.  He was then working as a general servant. 


His mother later lived at 55 Kitsbury Road, Berkhamsted. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Brockenhurst, Hampshire and initially served with the Royal Army Service Corps under reg. no. M2/176120, and was later transferred to the 1st Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment. 


Sidney died of wounds on 9 March 1918 and is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manacourt, Somme, France. (The 21st and 48th Casualty Clearing Stations were using this cemetery in March 1918.)

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £23 8s 10d. She also received a pension of 15s a week.
