Born on 8 Nov 1864 in Rugby, Staffordshire son of the Rev. Henry Woodward Crofton and Janette Barberie (Butler) Crofton. Educated at Haileybury College 1878-82 and Oxford Military College. He married Catherine Mary Stowell of 42, Abingdon Mansions, Kensington, London on 26 Nov 1901 in Mussoorie, India and had two children. Received his commission as Lieutenant from the militia to the North Staffordshire Regiment on 25 Nov 1885, became Captain on 6 Mar 1895 and Major on 14 Mar 1905. He served 29 years in N. Staffordshire Regiment including the Dongola Expedition, Sudan in 1896. He became Station Staff Officer 1st Grade in India in 1902 for two years and Brigade Major 1904-05. He retired in 1913.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war, he re-enlisted and was gazetted to the 9th Worcesters. He landed with the Mediterranean Expeditionary force and was killed in action at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli.
