Pre War
Herbert was born in 1894 in Woodhill, Herts. Son of David and Florence Kate Newton. Baptised on the 21st January 1894 at St Mark’s, Hatfield, Herts.
The 1901 census shows Herbert aged 7 years living with his Parents, and two Sisters in Essendon, Herts. and the 1911 census shows Herbert aged 17 years living at his employer’s establishment (Grocers Shop). 49 High Road, North Finchley, Middlesex. His occupation is Apprentice Grocer
Wartime Service
Herbert enlisted in Redhill, Surry, into the 8th Battalion, Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. He disembarked in France on the 31st August 1915.
Herbert was Killed in an attack on the night of 25th/26th September 1915, after leaving trenches east of Vermelles, during the Battle of Loos (25th Sept to 18th Oct 1915).
The Essendon Parish Magazine for December 1915: “Much sympathy is felt for Mr & Mrs David Newton in their anxiety for their son Bertie. He was engaged in the Battle of Loos a few weeks only after first going out to France and has not been heard of since”. Herbert has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
Additional Information
His parents address, given after death, was 19 Barfold, North Mimms, Hatfield, Herts, so it is possible that Herbert had no other connection to this location.
