Pre War

Roland Charles NEWMAN was born in 1899, in Childwick Green, Hertfordshire, son of Henry Newman a Police Constable an Eliza Charlotte Newman (nee Draper). One of their seven children although one died in infancy.


Roland was Baptised on 21st June 1899, with his brother Arthur Gilbert Newman, in the Parish of St Michaels, St Albans, Herts.


1901 Census records Roland aged 2, living with his parents, sisters Eve (16), Ethel (6), brothers Harry (13) and Arthur (4) at The Cottage, Childwick Green, Herts. The family had a Boarder John Godeanus (9).


1911 Census, Roland aged 11, is at school, living with his parents, sister Ethel, brothers Arthur and Ernest at The Lodge, Childwickbury, Herts.


The family later moved to 21 Prospect Road, St Albans Herts.

Wartime Service

Roland enlisted in London posted to the Gordon Highlanders, issued with the service No. 263096. On completion of his training, he was sent to the Western Front. He died on 8th July 1918, aged 19, of wounds received in action. He is buried in Anzin-St, Aubin British Cemetery France. Grave Ref: III. D. 13.

Additional Information

His effects of £6-16s-05d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £4, went to his mother Eliza Newman.


His Headstone inscription. “AT REST” was requested by his mother Eliza.
