Percy Sydney Denty was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, on 7th December 1894, son of William Benjamin Denty a, Ostler and Olive Mary Sophia Elizabeth Denty (nee Chittenden). The eldest of ten children although two died in infancy.
Baptised on 6th January 1895, at Waltham Cross, Herts.
1901 Census records Percy aged 6, living with his Grandparents Thomas and Mary Chittenden at, 3 Cross Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His parents and younger brother Albert (2) were living at, 2 Nelson Road Enfield, Middx.
1911 Census records Percy (16), as a House Boy, still living with his Grandparents, his sister Dorothy (6), is also living with them in, Railway Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His parents and four brothers Albert (12), Charles (10), Clarence (4) and Lionel are living at, 71 Crecent Road, Waltham Cross, Herts.
Sister Iris Ethel was born in 1912 and sister Mable Irene born in 1916.
His father William Benjamin Denty died on 7th December 1919, aged 50.
Wartime Service
Percy enlisted at Edmonton, Middlesex, on 3rd November 1915, aged 20, he gave his address as 71 Crescent Street, Waltham Cross, Herts, (now living with his parents) and his occupation as an Explosives Worker. Posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery joining at Dover, Kent, on 6th November 1915, with the service number 64283. He arrived in France on 15th June 1916, for service on the Western Front.
Percy received a Gun Shot Wound (GSW) to his right leg and thigh, admitted to No 34. Casualty Clearing Station on 21st March 1918, transferred to No 2. Stationary Hospital, Abbeville, France, where he died of his wounds on 26th March 1918. He is buried in the CWGC Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Additional Information
His effects of £8-13s-1d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £10-10s-00d, went to his mother Olive Denty. She also received a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from 1st October 1918, her address was 35 Crescent Road, Waltham, Cross, Herts.
* Please note the layout of this cemetery and its extension is very confusing. Abbeville Communal Cemetery consist of a small, separated area with rows A to E (no obvious plot number - the French graves are allocated plot I (1) and II (2)), plus plots III (3), IV (4), V (5), VI (6) in the lower level of the larger cemetery area. The extension consists of plots I (1), II (2), III (3), IV (4), V (5), VI (6), VII (7) VIII (8) and IX (9) - the raised area of the larger area of cemetery with the CWGC building.
