Pre War

Albert Nash was born in 1886 in Berkhamsted, the son of John and Jane Nash and one of six children.


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Ravens Lane, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a bricklayer. They remained there in 1901 at which time, 15 year old Albert was working as a brush factory hand (probably at Kent's brushes, Apsley).


He married Ellen Elizabeth (Nellie) Gravestock in 1910 and on the 1911 Census they were living at 2 Charles Street, Berkhamsted, where he was working as a painter. Their daughter Beryl Mary was born on 10 April 1914 and they later lived at 19 Kitsbury Road, Berkhamsted. 

Wartime Service

Albert Nash enlisted in Bedford and joined the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. 


He was killed in action on 23 October 1917 when the Battalion were near Canal Bank during the Battle of Ypres. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £5 10s and pay owing of £3 4s 7d. She also received a pension of 18s 9d a week.
