Harry Walter John Stagg was born on 9 March 1896 in Ayot St Lawrence, Herts to Walter & Annie Stagg.


The family were living in Ayot St Lawrence on the 1901 Census, and remained there in 1911 when they were living at the Manor House, Ayot St Lawrence, nr Welwyn, Herts and Harry was working as a house boy.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford and served initially with the Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 5733, later transferring to the 6th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales’ (Royal Berkshire) Regiment.

Harry was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme. His body was not recovered for burial and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £3 as well as pay owing of £4 12s 7d. A pension card exists with his mother as a dependant but gives no indication if a pension was awarded, although it was altered to show his father as dependant when she died giving the address as High Street, Codicote, Herts.
