William Charles Mumford was born in 1892 in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, (baptised in Wheathampstead, Herts on 25th Feb 1894) the son of William Mumford (born 1859 in Kings Walden, Herts) a Shepherd and Mahalah (nee Wilmot/Thomson) (born 1855 in Croma Hyde, Hatfield, Herts). The 1891 Census lists the family as parents, Joseph (born 1880), Ephraim Thomson (born 1879, stepson), James (born 1883) and Louisa (born 1890) living at Ayers End, Wheathampstead.
The 1901 Census records William aged 9, living with his parents, brothers Joseph, James and sister Louisa 11 at Hern’s Cottage, Tewin, Herts. They had visitors Rose Stratton and children George and Annie.
The 1911 Census records William aged 19, single and working as a labourer at a sewage works for Luton Borough Council, living at home with his parents in Cockernhoe, Luton, Beds.
Wartime Service
William enlisted in Hitchin, Herts, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private with the service No 15867. Prior to his enlistment William was living in Sandridge, Herts. No Service Records could be found for William.
He landed in France with the 8th Battalion on 30th Aug 1915 as part of 71st Brigade, 24th Division. In Oct 1915 8th Battalion were in the Ypres Area. The War diary records small numbers on other Ranks wounded at this time and there are pages missing for 17-30 Oct 1915. William is recorded as died of wounds on 22 Oct 1915,at Abeele, he is buried in the CWGC Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. B. 27.
Additional Information
His father, Mr William Mumford, Harker Lane Cottage, Nr London Colney, St Albans, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "AT REST".
War gratuity of £4 and arrears of £3 12s 10d was paid to his father.
