Born 1882 in Mill Hill, Middlesex, son of James William Mountney and Esther Mountney (née Hall). His father was a coachman. William was Baptised on the 10th September 1882 at St Mary’s Church, Hendon, Middlesex. The family home was at Ivy Cottage, Page Street, Mill Hill, Hendon, Middlesex. The 1901 Census shows him living in Bourn End, Wooburn Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, His occupation is given as Groom, Domestic and the 1911 Census shows him as a groom, stable, domestic and his address is Stable Yard, Boconnoc House, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. He enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

From his Medal card we find he entered the Theatre of War “France” on the 18th October 1915.
