It has not been possible to ascertain where Frederick Morris was born, or in what year, nor his connection to Baldock.


Probate records state that he lived at 49 Campden House Road, Kensington, Middlesex.

Wartime Service

Frederick initially served with the Scottish Rifles but transferred to the  Scottish Horse Regiment and served as 2nd Lieutenant when they were sent to Gallipoli.  They landed at Suvla Bay on 2 September 1915. He was later promoted to Lieutenant and served with the Scottish Horse Yeomanry.


He was drowned at sea on 27 May 1918, when on board H.T. Leasowe Castle which was sunk off Alexandria, Egypt. It was an armed troop transport ship carrying approximately 2900 soldiers on board heading for Flanders when it was attacked by German U boat UB51 which launched two torpedoes. One hit the ship which went down in about 90 minutes. Reports vary but around 90 soldiers were lost along with 9 crew. 


His body was not recovered for burial and his name is commemorated on the Chatby Memorial, Egypt.

Additional Information

William Morris, solicitor, obtained probate of Frederick's estate in London on 28 June 1919, with effects of £338 6s 3d.
