He was drowned at sea on 27 May 1918, when on board H.T. Leasowe Castle which was sunk off Alexandria, Egypt. It was an armed troop transport ship carrying approximately 2900 soldiers on board heading for Flanders when it was attacked by German U boat UB51 which launched two torpedoes. One hit the ship which went down in about 90 minutes. Reports vary but around 90 soldiers were lost along with 9 crew.
His body was not recovered for burial and his name is commemorated on the Chatby Memorial, Egypt.
