John James was born in Moreton in the Marsh, Glos in 1894 to Evan Cefu Morgan, a congregational minister and Selina (nee James) On the 1901 Census the Family of parents, sister Margaret (born 1892), John James, Evan I (born 1897) and Elsie (born 1900) were living at the Manse, Brewhouse Hill, Wheathampstead. On the 1911 Census John James was an assistant coal merchant’s clerk. He was living with his parents at the Manse with younger sister Selina Eudora (born 1902)
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for John. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in Royal field Artillery and was posted to B Battery, 77 (Howitzer) Brigade in 16 (Irish) Division and served with them on the Somme at Guillemont and Ginchy. His Artillery Brigade moved to the Ypres Sector. John was killed inaction on 7 April 1917possibly during preparatory artillery exchanges prior to the Battle of Messines (7-14 Jun 1917).
Additional Information
His mother, Mrs. S . Morgan, The Manse, Wicken Road, Newport, Essex. ordered his headstone inscription: "LATE OF WHEATHAMPSTEAD UNTIL THE DAY BREAK AND THE SHADOWS FLEE AWAY". War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £79 was paid to his father. Brother Evan Idrisyn enlisted 12 Oct 1916 as Gunner 124941 Royal Garrison Artillery served in France from 22 May 1917 to 19 Aug 1917 with 319 Siege Battery and demobilised as Corporal on 5 Feb 1919.
