Pre War

Ernest was born in 1892 in Charlton, nr Hitchin. His parents were Harry and Emma Morgan (Emily in the 1901 census).

In 1901 the family were living in Charlton, Hitchin. Present were both parents: Harry (32) and Emily (32), with Harry working as a drayman for a brewer. Their two children were: William (11) and Ernest Arthur (9).

in 1911 the family were still in Charlton. Both parents were present with Harry now working as a mineral water maker. The census recorded they had been married for 22 years with 2 children, all living. Ernest was 18 and a butcher salesman, like William his elder brother

Ernest joined the army by October 1914 and was allocated the Regimental Number G/2680 in the 9th Battalion of the Regiment.

Officially Ernest was recorded as born in Hitchin and enlisted there.

Wartime Service

He disembarked in France on 5 October 1915.


The 9th Battalion was part of the 72nd Brigade in the 24th Division at the Battle of Loos near Hulluch on the 26th September 1915, but he was in the Ypres Sector at the time of his death. 


Ernest died of wounds in Belgium. 


He was buried in Plot I, Row B, Grave 2 in the Reninghelst New Military Cemetery south west of Poperinghe in Belgium. The cemetery was opened to serve the local Dressing Stations and Field Ambulances. 

Additional Information

His father, Mr H. Morgan, of Charlton, Hitchin, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: “PEACE PERFECT PEACE GOD IS LOVE”.

After his death £2 10s 2d pay owing was authorised to go to Harry, his father, on 24 February 1916. Later, a war gratuity of £4 10s was authorised to be paid to him on 16 August 1919.

His pension cards record Harry, his father, as his next of kin/dependant, living at x, Hitchin. She was awarded a pension of 5s a week from 15 August 1916.

His brother William Henry Morgan enlisted on 29 May 1915 was wounded in the neck and face, returned to England on 18 October 1918, and discharged from the Army as no longer physically fit on 5 April 1919.
