William Henry Helme Moore was born at 37 Christchurch Avenue, Brondesbury Park, London on 1 September 1895 ,the son of Arthur Lewis Moore and Sara Moore (nee. Frehinghuysen) who were American by birth (both born in New York) but naturalised British in 1915. On the 1901 Census, the family were living at 18 Mapesbury Road, Kilburn, where his father was a coffee merchant's manager. William is listed as 'Helme'.
By the 1911 Census, he was a pupil at Malvern College, Worcestershire, while his parents and two sisters were living at 34 Mapesbury Road, Kilburn, London. He was educated at Malvern College from September 1909 to 1914 after which he entered Magdalen College, Oxford to study medicine.
On enlistment he gave his address as Hill Ree, The Warren, Radlett, Herts.
Wartime Service
He originally enlisted in the Inns of Court (Officer Training Corps) as a Private, Reg. No. 1049, and served in France from July 1915.
He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 10th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps.
He was killed accidentally at the Bombing School at Fleurbaix on 19 October 1915 when a G S Grenade exploded. It is thought he may have tapped it with his hand, causing the explosion. Others were injured in the blast, some seriously. He was 20 years old.
