Pre War
Sidney Arthur Moore was born in Edmonton, Middlesex in 1892, the son of Sidney Herbert and Victoria Moore and one of four children. He was baptised on 10 April 1892 at St Michael's Church, Wood Green, Haringey, Middlesex. The family were then living at 43 Park Avenue, Wood Green, London and his father was a schoolmaster.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at the same address and his father was listed as the principal of a private school working on his own account. Sidney was the oldest child and one of four sons. They remained in Wood Green in 1911 and Sidney was then working as an insurance clerk.
Wartime Service
Sidney enlisted in London and his service number of 8557 and the fact that he went to France as early as 4 November 1914 suggests that he had previously been a member of the 1st Volunteer Rifle Corps, later changed to the 5th (City of London) Battalion, also known as the 1st/5th London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade). He served as a Corporal and was later promoted to Sergeant.
He died of wounds on 8 May 1915, aged 23, at No. 13 General Hospital in Boulogne, from wounds received at Gravenstafel, Belgium and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Belgium.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of £15 16s. He also obtained probate of his estate on 30 August 1915 in London with effects of £118 16s. His brother, Richard Henry Trim Moore was killed in action on 30 April 1915. Pension cards exist in relation to Sidney and his brother Richard but give no indication if any pension was paid.
*1 Believed named on the lost memorial at Shenleybury.
Both brothers are commemorated on the family headstone in Shenley (St. Botolph) Churchyard, Shenleybury. Their inscription reads:
