Pre War
Richard Ernest Moore was born in St Albans, Herts in 1891, the son of James and Mary Moore. He was one of five children.
On the 1901 Census the family were living in Brighton Villa, Stanhope Road, St Albans. His father was aged 65 and his occupation described as a retired grocer.
His father died in and on the 1911 Census Ernest was living with his widowed mother at 57 Stanhope Road, St Albans and working as clothier's assistant. They also had a schoolmaster boarding with them.
His mother later lived at 14 Babington Road, Hendon, London.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Mill Hill, Middlesex and initially served with the Middlesex Regiment, under reg. no. 20966, later being transferred to the 1st Garrison Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.
He died of sickness on 20 February 1916, aged 26 and is buried in Delhi War Cemetery, India.
N.B. Medal Index Cards and Medal Award Rolls show he was only eligible for the British War Medal and not the Victory Medal. (This is because he did not see service overseas in a theatre of war, including garrison duty in India. - ref. wikipedia))
Additional Information
A £10 war gratuity was divided between his mother, who received £7 10s and his brother Charles, who received £2 10s. His mother also received pay owing of £6 14s 6d. Pension cards exist with his mother as dependant but give no details as to the amount received.
Richard is also commemorated on his family’s grave in St. Albans (Hatfield Road) Cemetery. His part of the inscription reads:
