William Crockett was born on 4 Jan 1890 in Bourne End, nr Hemel Hempstead, Herts, the son of William and Charlotte Crockett, and baptised there on 9 Mar 1890.
On the 1901 Census, the family were living at Bourne End, Nr Hemel Hempstead, where his father was working as a Labourer.
By the 1911 Census, William had already joined the Worcestershire Regiment and was a Private living in barracks at Grange Fort, near Gosport, Hants. His family remained living at Bourne End.
Wartime Service
William was already a serving soldier with the 1st Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment which was in Cairo when war broke out in August 1914. They returned to England, landing in Liverpool on 16 October 1914 and proceeded to France, landing at Le Havre on 6 November 1914.
He was killed in action on 11 March 1915, aged 26, probably at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, the first major attack launched by the British Army, which took place between 10 and 13 March 1915. Their commanding officer Lt Col, E C F Woodhouse was also killed in action
He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Additional Information
Brother to Thomas Crockett who died of wounds in France on 9 October 1916 and is buried in Abbeville Communal Community Cemetery, France. His mother received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £7 17s 2d.
