Albert Ernest Moore was born on 26 Nov 1884 in Caterham, Surrey to George Moore, a Sergeant 2nd Coldstream Guards, and Margaret (nee Leslie).
On the 1891 Census Albert was living with his parents and elder brothers George and William, younger brother Leslie and sisters Florence and Louisa at Wellington House, Westminster, London (Barracks). On the 1901 Census Albert is listed as a Private 2392 serving with the Coldstream Guards at Chelsea Barracks. Albert had enlisted (12 years with the Colours) on 30 Jan 1899. He was released as ’service no longer required’ on 18 Aug 1903. On 13 Apr 1907 Albert married Helen Sims in Uxbridge, Middlesex. On the 1911 Census Albert, a gardener, and Helen were living at Field Heath Hillingdon Uxbridge with children Albert Charles (born 1907) and Winifred (born 1909). Ernest William (born 1913 and Frances Lilian (born 1917) were to follow.
Wartime Service
Albert was aged 30 when he attested on 2nd Nov 1915 at Mill Hill for the Duke of Cambridges’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment giving his occupation as a gardener on 6 Nov 1915. He was posted a Private G/20976 to 15th Battalion.
He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 14 Dec 1915 and Corporal on 27 Jul 1916. On 1 Sep 1916 He was posted to 24 Battalion (Training Reserve) and renumbered as TR/13154. Albert was admitted on 9 May 1917 to Barnet War hospital and died on 26 May 1917, the cause was given as Malignant Endocarditis (inflammation of internal lining of Heart tissue).
Additional Information
His widow, Mrs H Moore, Field Heath, Hillingdon, nr Uxbridge, ordered his headstone inscription: "THY WILL BE DONE".
War Gratuity of £5 15s and arrears of £3 18s 2d was paid to his widow.
Being a military family albert's brothers also served :- William P Moore served as Private 1283 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards at the same time as Albert but completed his term of service (12 years,) recalled in 20 Aug 1917, as Private 22458 and described as Sergeant Instructor OTC when demobilised on 8 March 1919. Leslie Alexander Moore, a musician, served with 1st Royal Irish Regiment from 1903 to 1916 in South Africa, India, France and completed his service in May 1916. Survived until 1977. Tom Moore served as Corporal in 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment in France and was Killed in Action on the Somme 20 Nov 1916.
George Isaac served with Somerset Light Infantry from 1898 but length of service cannot be confirmed
