Tring Town Memorial

William Thomas Montague was born in Tring in 1890 to parents unknown.( no birth record was found).


On the 1901 census William was a resident in the Shaftesbury School (orphans from London) at Bisley, Surrey.


His sister Sarah was a resident in Ealing House Industrial School and little Girls home.


There is a record of a William Montague being baptised at Parish Church Bisley on 1 May 1904 with a father William Montague, soldier and mother unknown with an address of 2, Stratton Place, Frogmore Street, Tring (this is a transcription of entries from a National Refugees Schools Chapel Register).


On the 1911 Census William seems to have been a Tailor living in London at 43 Millman Street, Holborn, London.


His sister Sarah was later known as Fountain (no marriage was found) and lived at 44 Charles Street, Tring.

Wartime Service

William enlisted as a Territorial Soldier in 1st County of London Yeomanry (Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars) as Private 4354 (later numbered 228878) and at some time transferred to the 1st/4th (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers) with the Serial Number of G/81196.


This Battalion was in 140 Brigade 47th (2nd London) Division and in 1916 took part in Battles of the Somme at Flers-Courcelette(15-22 Sep) and Le Transloy (1-18 Oct). In 1917 they moved to the Ypres area and were at the Battle of Messines (7-14 Jun).  William was killed in Action on 28 Sep 1917 possibly by shellfire while in the Front line. His remains remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £5 1s 5d was paid to his sister Sarah Fountain.
