George Crockett was born in Tring on 3 Mar 1893 (baptised 3 Oct 1897 in Tring ) to Jesse Crockett, shoemaker, and Louisa (nee Hackett).


George’s Mother, Louisa ,died in 1899.


On the 1901 Census George was living with his father Jesse and sister Dora at 82, Akeman Street, Tring.


The 1911 Census records George Crockett, then aged 14, living at 2 Tabernacle Yard (off Akeman Street) with his father (Jesse), and sisters Dora and Louisa Jessie (born 1899). His employment is given as farm labourer.

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for George. George was enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 20466 and was posted to 2nd  Battalion, part of 89 Brigade, 30 Division.


The Division went to France in Nov 1915 and in 1916 were deployed to the Somme Sector to take part in the Battle of Albert (1-13 Jul) during which the objective of Montauban was taken. George was killed in action on 30 Jul 1916 during a period when the Bedfordshires would be serving in the Front Line but were not active in a major action.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £4 1s and arrears of £4 11s 2d was paid to his father.
