Pre War

George John Mills was born in 1899, the son of  Thomas and Elizabeth Mills, and baptised on 23 July 1899 in Great Berkhamsted. He was one of four children, but one had died by 1911. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 4 Thompsons Row, Berkhamsted where his father was working as a general dealer (on his own account). They had moved to 49A Ellesmere Road, Berkhamsted by 1911.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, Herts and served with 16th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. 


He was killed in action on 17 June 1918 and was originally interred in Blairville Orchard British Cemetery, later being exhumed and re-buried at Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France. 

Additional Information

His  mother received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £4 3s 9d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
